work in progress A Contemporary Stupa A stupa is a Buddhist monument to the spirit. It is a symbol for the quest of an enlightened mind, and the path towards this. "The visual impact of the stupa on the observer brings a direct experience of inherent wakefulness and dignity. Stupas continue to be built because of their ability to liberate one simply upon seeing their structure" - Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche Jeffrey Maron’s stupa is a contemporary interpretation that will be between thirty to forty feet tall. Spirits' Lair Spirits' Lair (a contemporary topiary sculpture), will be a living artwork, with a serene and tranquil interior area, inviting contemplation and serenity. The "Lair" is an environment, growing right out of the ground. This is unusual and bestows it with the energy of life and growth. The seven vertical pod-like shapes, which define the vertical walls of the lair, would be lattice constructions of metal upon which vines would grow. These vines will grow from the ground, cover the lattice pods, and wind their way up, around and through these forms, giving further life to the sculpture.. The vines would define the shape of the "Lair", which would be constantly living, growing and changing. It could be left to grow wild one year and carefully trimmed the next. Time would be apparent, represented by the growing of the vines. The Lair could be a place of meeting or meditation, and it will always be alive and growing. Please click an image for a larger view.
