“Often when coloring the copper alloy plates with oxides, I will put on much more than I need. The painting then goes through an ugly phase, until I rub back, an important step in creating depth and texture. In other areas I may let the underlying colors seep through a thin translucent glaze of color. It is important to sense when to use each technique.” JM
